You don’t read much about Dordogne in the U.S. We’re heading North… on the interior of the Bordeaux coast where the rivers run smooth and black, the truffles grow like kids and cavemen lived in… caves… Perpignan is kinda the big toe of France and has just the cutest, swooning-sounding name when French women say it. And yet still today, none of it sticks…😩 ĭriving out of Moltig-les-Bains in the southwest of France, you hook a left at Perpignan and boogie north. Staring and chewing, silently practicing the tenses in my head. But it was just as good to have a picnic across the way. Tried to book, but they were long bedded-up. Found out this is actually a hotel, one of the fanciest in France, which made me giddy to stay in something so memorable and cool. But never had a chance to come here, these lush green valleys and lazy dark rivers. All 44 of us big-nosed and pimpled boys rapt with attention, hanging on every Imparfait thing she’d say, because she was… plus-perfect.Īnyway, back to the video below. Her French class was the only class in school that was absolutely pin-quiet. She had us all at “Bonjour” (and the sexy way she wore linen). She was super hot, no doubt made hotter because she was probably the first non-nun (or non-former-nun) teacher we had. Madame Zemkuznekov’s High School French Class, to be exact. The guide gave one of the best tours I have been on and was so passionate to share the cave with the group.- It has been since high school I’ve wanted to see this exact spot. It worked out for the best though because the next day I got a choice of tour times and was able to go on a tour in English. I arrived at 8:30am one morning and missed getting in by one person. I would get there by 8:00am (opens at 9:30am), especially if you want to get onto an English tour. Only 80 people can enter the caves each day, but that number can be reduced with no notice for conservation reasons. Everyone must stand in line for same-day tickets only. ![]() TIP: Older guidebooks advise getting tickets in advance, but in 2013 that changed. A walk in this cave shows the masterful skills and perspective these artists had and their ability to create a dynamic scene that comes alive when a fire torch is held to the walls. There were plenty of animals roaming around at this time so hunting was easy, leaving people with spare time to focus on other aspects of life like art and music. If you had an idea that prehistoric people were barbarians focused only on killing animals to survive, this experience will give you an entirely new perspective. The art cannot be dated exactly, but it is estimated to be 15,000 years old. The Lascaux II cave is a meticulous replica and is supposed to be wonderful to visit as well.) (The famous Lascaux cave also in Dordogne has polychrome paintings but had to be closed since it has rapidly deteriorated after being open to the public. Font-de-Gaume is the last cave in the world with polychrome (multicolored) paintings to be open to the public. Even if you are not particularly interested in prehistoric times, this cave is an absolute must-see. Dordogne is well-known for its prehistoric caves. ![]()
